Since it is impossible to determine the properties of an adhesive bond after the fact, considerable attention is paid to preliminary testing and quality assurance during the bonding process. In the preliminary testing, we assess the load-bearing capacity and aging properties of the adhesive bond. We also estimate the reproducibility of the chosen process and the available production resources. Subsequently, during execution, we create test specimens in parallel with the bonding process to be able to assess whether the adhesive, the surface preparation and the process parameters remain acceptable.
Destructive testing plays an important role in quality assurance of adhesive bonds. These tests provide insight into fracture behavior as well as values for, among other things, shear strength and peel resistance, which are important in the design process and in the following phase, particularly for assessing the quality of all bonding process steps.
Often two standardized methods are used for adhesive bonds, whether aged or not. For example, EN 1465 is frequently used for shear tests:
